Technology, Data and Sustainability: Two Days of International Meeting at Fonderia di Torbole for the ALCHIMIA Project

On June 25–26, we had the honor of hosting the Genaral Assembly of the European ALCHIMIA project at Fonderia di Torbole: a valuable opportunity for discussion, collaboration, and a shared vision among consortium partners committed to developing advanced solutions for the metallurgy industry of the future.
The program kicked off with an inspiring tour of the foundry’s production facilities, where participants had the chance to closely observe the technologies, people, and processes driving our sustainable cast iron production. It was a significant moment to share our best practices and highlight our daily commitment to concrete, responsible, and forward-looking innovation.
A Project to Fuse Data and Sustainability
ALCHIMIA is much more than a research project: it is a vision. In an industry facing increasingly complex challenges related to efficiency, quality, and sustainability, data analysis and artificial intelligence have proven to be essential tools.
At Fonderia di Torbole and in our associate Pilenga Baldassarre Foundry, innovation lies at the heart of everything we do. With this spirit, we actively contribute to the ALCHIMIA project, which aims to develop a system capable of predicting the final quality of the casting by integrating data analysis from the melting and quality control stages.
The goal? To improve the quality of our products by optimizing process variables through an approach based on statistical correlations and predictive models. A step forward toward a more circular, more efficient, and greener production.
The Core of the Meeting: Technical Sessions, Results, and Next Steps
During the two-day event, the plenary sessions allowed us to share key progress updates and align on the next project developments. Among the topics discussed:
• Ethical analyses and social impacts of the project, with a focus on E-Post evaluation and the human impact of new technologies.
• Validation and technical integration of predictive models within production environments.
• Economic and technical feedback, with Fonderia di Torbole and Pilenga Baldassarre Foundry presenting the cost-effectiveness and benefits of the tested solutions.
• Contributions to the European Green Deal, with reflections on how the developed technologies can concretely impact EU environmental goals.
Further discussions also covered dissemination strategies, environmental impact, and industrial optimization, along with a roadmap aimed at maximizing results in the medium to long term.
Looking Ahead
The two days in Torbole concluded with the definition of the upcoming work plan, focusing on strengthening federated learning algorithms, experimental validation of models in industrial settings, and expanding communication and standardization activities.
We are proud to contribute to a project that brings together tradition and technology, people and data, industry and sustainability. Because only through the power of collaboration can we build a smarter, fairer, and more resilient future.
ALCHIMIA continues. And we move forward with it.
