ALCHIMIA showcases circular economy strategies for the steel industry at LCM 2025 – Global to Local

The ALCHIMIA project participated in the Life Cycle Management Conference (LCM 2025), hosted in Palermo from 9 to 12 September. The LCM Conference Series is among the world’s leading forums for environmental, economic, and social sustainability, serving as a platform where academia, industry, NGOs, and public institutions exchange knowledge and best practices on life cycle approaches. The 2025 edition, organised under the theme “Global to Local”, focused on operationalising sustainability across different contexts and levels of decision-making.
Within this international forum, ALCHIMIA presented the poster:
“Using Life Cycle Assessment to support the selection of the most efficient circular economy strategies in the steelmaking industry: learnings from the ALCHIMIA, GreenHeatEAF and PURESCRAP projects.”
The presentation showcased how the project is using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) not only as a reporting tool but as a decision-support methodology. By embedding LCA into the early stages of design and improvement of processes, ALCHIMIA aims to identify and prioritise the most sustainable pathways for decarbonising the steel sector.
A key message of the contribution is that applying LCA proactively enables the sector to:
– Compare alternative circular economy strategies for steelmaking.
– Assess trade-offs between resource efficiency, environmental impacts, and process performance.
– Provide guidance for investment decisions in innovative low-carbon technologies.
– Accelerate the transition towards sustainable, circular, and competitive steel production in Europe.
The poster also drew on synergies with two related initiatives – GreenHeatEAF and PURESCRAP – which, together with ALCHIMIA, are advancing solutions for decarbonisation and circular economy in steelmaking.
By contributing to LCM 2025, the ALCHIMIA consortium reinforced its role in bridging research and practice, ensuring that advanced methodologies such as LCA are translated into tangible industrial strategies that support the EU’s climate and circularity goals.
