Women in European Steel: Fostering Inclusion in a Changing Industry

The European steel industry has traditionally had a lower representation of women in its workforce. However, this landscape is evolving. Automation and technological advancements are creating new opportunities in various sectors of steel production, from engineering to quality control and management.

The ALCHIMIA PROJECT contributes to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for gender equality (SDG 5) and decent work (SDG 8) through its proactive approach to integrating digitalization and automation into technological processes within the steel sector. By embracing these advancements, ALCHIMIA aims to make the industry more attractive to women and other underrepresented groups.

Introducing digitalization and automation can effectively reduce physical barriers traditionally associated with steel manufacturing, offering opportunities for flexible work arrangements and remote monitoring. This flexibility not only accommodates diverse lifestyles but also promotes inclusivity by providing equal access to career advancement and skill development.

Programs like “Mujeres del Acero” (#MujeresDeAcero), an initiative by UNESID in Spain, aim to promote and recruit women in the steel industry. Led by Gema Palazón, director of Organization and HR at UNESID, this program highlights the contributions of professional women, offering essential training and networking opportunities. By fostering a more diverse and inclusive workforce, “Mujeres del Acero” enhances the industry’s competitiveness and works towards a more equitable future.

While significant progress has been made, challenges remain. The industry still faces issues such as bias, harassment in the workplace, and the underrepresentation of women in management positions. Addressing these challenges requires continued effort and collaboration among all stakeholders.

The ALCHIMIA PROJECT is committed to continuing our advocacy for gender equality and decent work conditions. We will work alongside industry partners, government bodies, and initiatives like Mujeres del Acero to ensure that the steel industry becomes a model of inclusivity and sustainability.
